Kansas City!

We had a fabulous weekend get-a-way last week down in Kansas City! A few months ago one of our buddies talked us into doing the Kansas City Marathon as a relay team. We registered, feeling like it felt forever away but it creeped up on us before we knew it! So after a long week of school and work, we all took off to Kansas City (which is only about 2.5 hours away from us) and had a great time! It is such a fun city, and it was so fun to see it right in the prime of Fall. There are a ton of beautiful bridges, the houses were AMAZING (I could SO live there), fabulous barbeque, and the best shopping I've ever witnessed in my entire life!
We all crammed into the La Quinta motel the night before the big race and all got the worst night's sleep of our life, only to wake up at 5 the next morning to get to the race. Meet our team: Team Swagger! So our route was the same as the full marathon and we each took a leg. The legs varied on distance depending on hills, etc. so from 3.3 miles to 7. We were bussed off to where our legs started and dropped off and just waited until our team mates arrived to send us on our way! Our team did great, we got just under 4 hours. We were proud of ourselves seeing that all 3 of the boys are dental students who basically sit on their behinds all day, every day and never get a chance to get out and run, Dahlia who was a great sport for joining our team last minute and doesn't run much at all, and I was super sick and had just called in the day before because I could hardly walk up the stairs without feeling I was going to pass out. It was truly the longest 7 miles of my life!! I felt like I was running the whole marathon, but we all survived and it was a great feeling to be done! Here's the whole clan of runners (Ali and Tiffany did the full marathon and did awesome)!Scott has never run more than 5 miles in his whole life and totally rocked his leg! He had 6.3 miles to run and did it in about 45 minutes. He had the very last leg and so he was able to run through the finish line with all the marathon runners and had a blast. He was literally sprinting he had so much adrenaline from everyone cheering for him, handing him gummy bears, etc., and everyone was shouting, "Look at that tall guy run!" and "Go red! Go!" It was one of the funnest moments of his life (according to him) and quite a site to see! So we were proud of him, especially for making up for some of our slow time!

This is Ali, my very bestest best friend out here who I love and adore. She ran the whole marathon in a short 3 hours and 30 minutes and qualified for the Boston marathon which she was so excited about! She is a rockstar.
The whole crew who came down:After an afternoon of resting (acting like we had run a full marathon) we showered and went out on the town.......for the best barbeque in the whole world. After all, Kansas City is known for barbeque and boy howdy did we find it alright! One of our friends brother's lived in Kansas City and told us the place to go. Who would've thought the best food we've ever had would be inside a gas station? Yep! Oklahoma Joe's! You walk into this gas station and on one side is just a normal station and on the other side is a hoppin' restaurant that smells of delicious ribs and brisket! (here is a picture from the "gas station" side. Notice the line going out the door?Scott placing his order......and then 5 minutes later......he's the happiest boy in the world:Did you need a close up of that goodness?AMAZING. It truly was.We digested by walking around what's called "The Plaza", and it's every shop you can possibly imagine. Let's just say it's a good thing Scott and I have zero money and we were with 4 boys or I would've been in big trouble. But don't worry, I'll be back. We went to the cutest little homemade ice cream shop, Murrays. They had delicious hot cookies, brownies, hot cocoa, homemade ice cream, apple cider, banana splits, you name it. Even fat free soft serve ice cream for those of us who felt we had far spent our calories up at Okalahoma Joe's! Mmmmmm delicious!
We had the chance to stop at Liberty Jail while we were there. It was truly amazing and the spirit is so strong there. I have never been to any of the church sites so it was a treat for me.
We can't wait to go to Kansas City again! We will be back for more Okalahoma Joe's (since every night Scott mentions, "Oh I wish I could have Okalahoma Joe's right now."), and me to do some shopping maybe??? Thanks for the great time everyone and forever strong Team Swagger!!!

Wait, what?

I have been looking forward to Fall for months now, it is my favorite season. I'm not going to lie, I have been having some Utah withdrawls knowing that it is "prime time" for the leaves there right now. Last year I rode my bike up either Millcreek Canyon, City Creek, Emigration, or along Wasatch almost every day. It was heaven for me. I've missed gathering with family and sharing a large pot of homemade soup and sipping on some cider afterwards.....maybe even some good pumpkin carving action afterwards and sucking on the seeds that night while watching a flick. Life is good in the Fall.
I've been waiting.....waiting......waiting for the leaves to start changing here in Omaha. I'd heard Fall is just beautiful here.......still waiting. The temperature dropped and last week it became freezing cold and rainy, and still, not too much action with the leaves changing into beautiful reds, oranges, and yellows.

This morning I woke up at about 5a.m. due to my dried out throat and congestion and looked out the window and what did I see? SNOW. Lots of it. I climbed back into bed because I instantly got cold and cuddled up to Scott and whispered to him that it was snowing out there. So much for him replacing our brakes today.
I'm not quite sure what the weather is going to bring in these next coming months, but all I know is that we officially got jipped from Fall and it looks like this outside our house right now!
Although I can't complain too much because it did call for a wonderful, snuggly, morning with hot cocoa, crepes, and scrambled eggs. I think Scotty and I are going to bag cleaning the house, going to the gym, and changing the brakes on the Subaru and just cuddle up and watch a movie instead. Maybe we'll just watch movies all day. Guess I can't complain too much.

I let them down....

Today at school we had an awesome assembly for the kids. Two people from the Enchanted Rainforest came and talked all about the rain forest and brought real, live animals to show the kids. They were loving it, it was getting more and more exciting with each animal they brought out. From the talking parrot to the monkeys and whatever that animal on Madagascar is.....it was great! They called on 3 volunteers to come up and pointed at me. I was excited to see what furry kind of animal would be crawling all over me next and the kids were loving it. My class was cheering for me as I walked up and they thought it was just the coolest thing that Mrs. Elder got to go up in front of the WHOLE school and touch an animal!! So I'm standing there next to two other teachers and I look back waiting to see what they were going to bring out next and what do I see???? This:NO WAY. Immediately my heart jumped outside of my chest and was beating just as bad as when Scott and I were camping last summer and were positive there was a bear outside our tent that was surely going to kill us. I BOOKED it. I ran away from that thing as fast as I could and started to CRY. Wow! How embarrassing is that? Let me explain, it was like I had no control over my body, the tears just started flowing along with the heart beating like I had just sprinted a marathon for crying out loud. All day long every kid that passed me in the hall mentioned the episode or asked, "Are you really THAT afraid of snakes?" or "It was just a snake." or "You are such a scaredy cat!" I always said I hate snakes and am scared of them, but now after today I truly know (after my first true encounter with one.....let alone a 10 ft. long BOA CONSTRICTOR) that I truly am terrified of them. According to my students, I could have been famous after today but instead I cried in front of the whole school. Did I mention, that kind of snake can eat something 3 times the size of the fattest part of their body? (a.k.a. ME?) Hello!!!! Ten bucks they would've ran too.
Plus, I might be "weird" for crying over a snake, but at least I'm not this weird:
