Well unlike Jane, Sam was not breach so I was going to try and have a V-back. They were saying that his head was measuring very large (and so was he) but mostly his head and that maybe it wouldn't be a good idea. I was bummed because my C-section with Jane was somewhat of a disaster. But we went ahead and did it and all went perfectly. The bummer was, his head really wasn't very big and he was 8 lbs 3 oz. Totally doable but oh well! He was born August 22nd at around 11AM at the University of Utah Hospital. We were so thrilled you came out healthy, what a blessing.
Sam was a tricky little baby. He was a fuss! Jane always called him "Fuzzy little guy" but Scott and I would call you "Fussy little guy." You never wanted to be put down, hated the swing, the bouncer, just always wanted to be held. I decided to go ahead and embrace it and thank heavens that time passed. Sam, you have been a tricky baby.
At two months old you gave us quite the scare. Your dad and I went out on a date and left you with a babysitter. We came home and you were doing great. I went and played in an indoor soccer game and came home and your dad said you had been great. You were sounding kind of raspy and I was bummed, thinking you had picked up a cold. I put you to bed and you just weren't going for it (which was rare). I decided I would sleep on the couch with you for a little bit. Within the next couple of hours you just couldn't quite get comfortable. You started wheezing and it got really bad FAST. In my head I was thinking everything was still okay and sadly it was going through my mind of how expensive an E.R. visit is, and so I kept playing it out a little bit. The spirit was telling me to call up the stairs to your dad. I still waited. FInally the voice said, "GO!" and I called for Scotty and he came down, heard you breathing and we jumped in the car within one minute. We drove 100 mph up to Primary Children's and I ran you in there and told them you were barely breathing. They rushed you back and there was about 30 people in your room in about 20 seconds. You were blue and purple. I thought for sure we were going to lose you and it kept going through my head of how I was going to tell your sweet sister who loved and adores you so much. I could see the Dr.'s looking at each other and shaking their heads. THey had everything unpacked and were ready to intubate you and you started to scream. Nobody could believe it. It was a miracle. You turned around so fast. It was the scariest night of my life little Sam. You were admitted to the ICU and I couldn't take my eyes off you or leave your side. I can't believe I take the blessing of health so for granted. I try to remember each day how lucky we are.
Since that first scary episode, you have gotten croup two more times and currently have RSV. You have given us such a run little guy, and it breaks my heart to watch you suffer. You have been SO sick this time around. They put you on steroids for croup just in case, along with the RSV and your bottom two teeth are just starting to poke out. Talk about a load all at once! You have been one unhappy camper. I have been taking you up to Primary Children's to get suctioned out twice a day and it's been such blessing they're letting us do that instead of having you in the hospital. Today you made major progress and I'm hoping we've passed that "peak" that everyone warned us about. Just when I thought it couldn't get any worse, it sure did! The last two days have been horrific, for all of us (but mostly you, I know).
Sam, when you are healthy you are such a smiley, happy little guy. You are such a flirt when you see other gals. You love to giggle but you get the hiccups every single time.
The person who makes you happiest is definitely your sister Jane. No one gets you as excited as she does! She adores you and cares for you and is always all over you (probably why you keep getting sick). You are going to be in good hands with her as your big sis.
Sam, you are a chunk. Your legs are so dang edible that I wish I could just snack on them. You have rolls galore on your arms and legs. People look at you and don't believe me when I say that you're chubby because you have a small head but when you're "nudenick" (as Jane says it) you are the Michelin man! You are 5 months old and weighed in at 21.8 pounds the other day at the Dr. We LOVE seeing you grow and thrive so much!
Sam, you screamed bloody murder in your car seat everywhere we went for 2 months. I drove me wild and I didn't go anywhere out of a ten minute radius because I couldn't handle it! Now you are a champ. Haleleujia!
This was your first smile!
You melt me big guy. And that double chin is classic.
Sam, you were blessed in golf shoes which I'm pretty sure means you're going to be a golfer like your daddio. (thanks auntie Abby)!
You were kind of a red head when you were born but that's faded out. But your eyes are still blue and that's a total mystery!
You have been a tummy sleeper since day one. At first it terrified me and I had to check on you constantly but you have sustained a very strong neck because of it! You love tummy time and are always so content. You're going to start to move soon I think!
The tub is your happy place. Especially while you've been so sick, it's the one place I could put you in and mostly have you stop fussing. You love to sit in that warm water and kick your legs. I am always soaked by the time we're done. You've loved the tub since day one. You just stare up at me and smile.
Sam you have a million nick names: Sammers, Sambo, Sumo Sam, Wheezy, Sam Dog, Fuzzy little Guy, Jane calls you "sweetie" and "honey", Sammy. We'll have to see what sticks!
You are constantly kicking your legs. Always on the move. You love to stand but I'm not going to let you walk before you crawl like I did your sister.
This is you and your dad side by side at 3 months. I'd say you guys look like twinners!
Love you Sam Man.
